| Teen Boy Modeling in NYC - Need Advice!? My son recently decided he wants to try his luck at modeling to save money for college. He is a good looking guy, but that's not necessarily what makes a model. I am in NYC. I don't have alot of money to invest in his new endeavor, but I would like to be supportive. Especially since he has good intentions! I also don't have a lot of time. I know very little about the business or even how to go about getting started. I am also very concerned about scams and wasting a lot of time chasing them! Does anyone have any valuable advice on who, what, when, where, and how? Any legitimate advice or lead? Do I have to spend a small fortune on professional headshots, etc? |
| First of all, models do not find jobs through websites so forget signing up for the sites mentioned above or other so-called modeling sites. I don't know any clients who book models through talent sites - over 95% of modeling jobs are booked directly through agencies. If you don't have a lot of time it's not going to work. As the parent of any model under 18 you are going to need a lot of free time to take your son from audition to audition. The average model goes to 100 go-sees for every 1 job they are booked on so you can see how time consuming it is. You also have to be prepared for your son to miss a lot of school going to auditions as most auditions are held weekdays during normal business hours. Don't ever pay for professional photos before your son is signed to an agency. All you need for consideration is a good headshot, full body shot and profile headshot. Amateur digital photos or prints are fine as long as they are clear, well-lit and shot against a plain white background (any white wall or hang a white sheet over a wall) Once you are signed to an agency, you will normally have to pay for comp cards (about $200-600 depending on the photographer) and a few test shoots to start the portfolio (about $150-200 per test shoot) but these are not paid through the agency. They are paid directly to the photographer. And you should be given a choice of photographer, not forced to use one specific photographer recommended by the agency. You also need to be realistic. There isn't that much work for male models to begin with, and even less for teenage male models. There are very few magazines that feature teen male models, most clothing brands use male models age 18 or older, etc. It's rare that a teen male model would make enough money in the first 1-2 years to cover the cost of their comp cards and test shoots. Also, very few agencies will even consider male models under age 17 or 18. Once your son is over 13 he is no longer a guy model and if you pay attention to magazines and catalogs, you'll see there are very few male models who look to be age 14-18. Just look at J Crew or A&F - most models are either guys or older guys |
