Questions for the really hardcore Buffy/Angel fans.?
I'm a huge fan but their are a few things that I wonder about...

1. How old was Riley supposed to be (i don't know why I care but I do) he was a TA so roughly how old does that make him?

2. Are the two comic seasons set in seperate universes or on different timelines? How is Angel in LA and Twilight. (I've only read about 6 of the comics so far)

3. Were the people Angel worked for in 'Why We Fight' the initial formation of The Initiative?

4. In Angel's perfect day fantasy in 'Awakening' who brought him the perfect happiness? He had dream sex with Cordelia but said Buffy's name. (I guess this ones open to interpritation)

6. Are their supposed to be different breeds of Werewolves, as Nina, Varuca and Oz all look different or is it's just bad continuity?

7. Was it ever acknowledged by Joss the souless monster, whether or not Hallie and Cecily were the same person?

8. Xander says in OMWF "respect the cruller and tame the doughnut". What does that mean? Is it a reference to film or something, I just don't understand?

9. Would it be reasonable to believe that Faith and Kendra recieved an allowance or some form of money from being a slayer. How else did they take care of themselves? Faiths motel room etc.

Anything else you think I may not know feel free to share. :)
1. He was around 21 or 22. He was probably at Honours level to be a TA and he was established at TI so he wouldn't have been younger than 21, I'm assuming.

2. I Don't read em, I hate how twisted/OTT they are.

3. The Demon Research Initiative (established in the 1940s) on Angel is the original name of The Initiative, so yes, it's the same thing.

4. I think it was meant to show the duel-feelings Angel had for both Buffy and Cordelia; maybe in a perfect world he'd have both of them?? If he was just thinking about Buffy then somehow the fantasy would've provided for Buffy to be the one he was sleeping with?

5. There are dozens of breeds of werewolves in Werewolf Lore, so they were probably bitten by different breeds. That's my explanation, at least.

6. Whedon and Kali Rocha both stated they're the same person with different aliases: Hallie, Cecily Adams and Cecily Underwood. In Older and Far Away, season 6, she and Spike (whom she called William) recognize each other but deny being acquainted, remember?

7. It's parodied from a line in the film Magnolia. In Magnolia, Tom Cruise says "Respect the c*ck and tame the c*nt". Nice to know Xander isn't as obscene as that but the imagery of a cruller and a doughnut are still similar to...well, you know. Stupid sexist quote.

8. Faith isn't very moral as we've seen, I'm assuming she gained her money doing sus deeds like stealing, which she's been shown to have done anyway. She often abused her strength, there's no way she wouldn't steal or something for self-preservation. As for Kendra she was all for 'the system'...every Watcher's dream Slayer. Obedient and for the cause. The Council probably had no quelms helping her out financially. They got her to Sunnydale, afterall, they probably paid for her other needs. Not sure, though.

Anything else you need to know? I dunno, Lolly, you tell me? ;)
Any advice on how i would go about...?
getting my feet in the door at a comic publisher, a buddy and i have made 3 demo issues of a comic series...please dont say go to school...its just this isnt a typical super hero comic, its for adults, and that kind of hardcore violence/sex/story is a bit hard to promote.
You can always create your own website and create a web comic.
Help! need advice!?
this isnt a Q about dating, but this is where there are the most people...so anyone with any helpful knowledge, please do so!

The 'darker' aspects of Japanese pop culture?
I know it's an entirely different culture blah blah...please no smartass answers.

And I'm not saying ALL Japanese are...and I don't mean to offend anyone...but why are so many things which the West considers 'sick' or 'perverted' actually quite mainstream in Japan?

I mean everywhere in the world has its social flaws, and sure we also have pedophiles, rapists, pornography etc. But studies have shown that Japan produces more hardcore pornography than the rest of the world combined. Not only that, but a high percentage is guy porn (i.e. minors under 16 years old) and only very recently was a law put in place to prevent guy porn.

Schoolgirl fetish, pantie vending machines, violent/misogynistic manga, hentai cartoons and comics. Nowhere else in the world has come up with these. There even exists a videogame called 'Rapelay' where the object is to repeatedly molest and rape a girl and her mother, the girl winds up pregnant, and the winning aim is to convince her to go through with an abortion.
WTF?

Perhaps this is a minority, but honestly, it would be illegal to even plan on making such a graphic and vile videogame in the West. It is available in Japan.

And when you hear of the (very few) Japanese murder crimes, they are always very extreme and often involve torture, mutilation, sexual abuse etc. Victims such as Junko Furuta, Lindsay Anne Hawker...
Many popular Japanese hardcore rock songs contain explicit lyrics about sadomasochism, torture and misogyny.

My question is...why is this so unique to Japan? Why is Japan obsessed with things that are twisted and 'cute-but-evil'... violence, sex and an attitude to these things that is only heard of in their own country?
A lot of it is the western media overblowing the subject all together.

Case point: panty vending machines. I have never once ever see a used panty vending machine in Japan ever.

Schoolgirl fetish exists very in the west as well.

Again many of it look at it from a western point of view, but compare it side by side with some things you find in the west and it isn't that much different.

Hardcore Japanese music? Really that different from American rap music or hardcore music? American rap music can contain explicit lyrics about killing policemen and having sex with women.

For the RapeLay game, it is definitely not something mainstream in Japan, in fact due to LAWS (yes there are regulatory laws) it is impossible to purchase the game mainstream or at all.

Also, have you sat down and ever thought, about the MILLIONS of other games that are popular in the world (including many produce in the west) where the goal is the MURDER/KILL someone?
You see how the perspective is? The western media will pick on countries like Japan for having games like RapeLay (which is not mainstream), but not pick on themselves about marking and selling popular (mainstream games) where the goal is to kill things and the more things you kill the higher points you get. How about all the Hollywood productions of horror films where people's heads get chopped off, blood and guts getting splattered everywhere.
Again so, whats the perspective? Something that isn't mainstream in Japan vs. killing and murder in video games that IS mainstream in the west?

One can flip the question around to yourside and ask, why are games that include murder and killing popular in your country or other western countries? Yet a game that is not mainstream in Japan gets all the western media's attention?

Think about it, IS IT REALLY THAT DIFFERENT when you think about it in perspective?

Turn on a Japanese TV and all you see all day is news, sports, a lot of talk shows, a lot of variety tv shows and of course a bunch of TV dramas. None of them having nudity or poorly acted violence on them. That's mainstream Japanese media for you.

Turn on American TV you get the same (news, sports, talkshows), except in the evenings you get cars getting blown up, people getting shot and killed more violently (Japanese dramas and guns are hilarious), sex crimes investigation unit, news about the war, people's heads getting stuck in toilets. That's mainstream western media.

Violent crime doesn't happen in the west either? How about that guy who just killed two women, a boy and guynapped a girl in America. The guy chopped up the mother, her friend and the boy and put them inside a tree. Not extreme enough??

Are you trying to make somesort of connection between anime/manga/movies and video games with murder?

That's a hard argument to make because millions of people in the West and the world in Asia love action movies, etc yet you don't have millions of people walking around killing people either.

Anycase:
YES crime happens in Japan, it happens everywhere in the world, however when compared with the west, Japan has the lowest crime statistics then the USA, Canada, UK and a whole bunch of other western countries COMBINED.

Again depends all on perspective now....

Now I'm not saying I like hentai or things like that (I don't). However the point I am trying to make is, Japan isn't that different from most other countries or even western countries. It just depends on how you look at it...perspective.

The western news media of course blows a lot of it out of proportion too. Things that aren't mainstream in Japan get pointed out as being bad and reported like it is mainstream, yet things the western media does that is mainstream is "OK" then compared to Japan?
Is This a Good Idea for Meeting Women?
I'm thinking of going to a bookstore to try and find a girl... is this a bad idea? I'm a college student, recently transferred to the school I am at currently, and I don't know anyone, other than my roommates. I'm a fairly shy person... I'm an amateur comic strip artist, and an engineering student by major, but I really feel uncomfortable when I try to meet girls. I'm a really great guy, and I have a lot of really romantic ideas... but I can't do any of my ideas unless I actually MEET a girl. I thought it might be a good idea to go by a bookstore to try and meet girls. I figure any girl that willingly spends her weekend in a bookstore is probably the right kind of girl for me. Is this a stupid idea that will never work? If so, what might be some other locations I might want to try? I don't drink...I don't smoke... I believe in no sex before marriage... basically I have every hardcore christian value without being christian. Where might I find girls like this, because apparently it isn't on a college campus.
Yeah, that's a start.

I like this guy's advice. It's pretty good.
• Ask 5 beautiful women, “Excuse me, do you know what the time is?”
• Ask 5 beautiful women, “Excuse me, do you know where the nearest coffee shop is?
• Ask 5 beautiful women, “Excuse me, do you know where the nearest men’s fashion store is? [She replies]. Oh thanks, I’m trying to get some new shirts. You’re very well dressed, do you have any tips for me?”
• Tell 5 beautiful women, “Excuse, I just saw you walking past and I thought you were really cute, I had to stop and say hello. How are you?”

After you’ve completed these tasks, you are ready to move onto standard transitioning and attraction building etc.
Would the Watchmen movie have been more successful if they had kept the squid?
toned down the sex and violence and gone with a PG-13 rating rather than an R to draw in the family audience. There was a lot more sex and violence in the movie than in the comic book. I think stereotyped notions of what comic book nerds and geeks enjoy led producers and execs to make bad decisions about how best to keep hardcore fans happy and appeal to a broader audience.
I liked the action in the movie, but would have been just as happy with less violence if they had kept the squid and the havoc and carnage it brings once it appears (graphically violent scenes yes, but probably much less violence than that added to movie in other scenes).

I doubt anyone will answer this but i'm hoping they're a few hardcore fans of the GN out there on Y!A.
I saw the film first, which I liked very much. Then I went out and read the graphic novel.

Would it have been more successful if they had kept the squid?

I don't know about SUCCESSFUL, but it would have made more sense. Why? Because mankind - all the nations of the earth - would now be united Forever, thinking there may again come an attack from Outer Space, and they must always be prepared & united as one to fight it.

This makes total sense to me. And what they did in the film would not, no way, never, never, ensure Total Peace for the rest of time.

There's one more thing to consider, that has nothing to do with your question. I remember reading that when Alan Moore submitted his 'ending' with the squid to the publisher, there were people there who HATED it, and said he stole it right from the old Outer Limits TV show (an episode with Robert Culp). In fact, there's a frame drawn by Gibbons where someone's actually watching THAT TV show in the comic! Sheeze. So at that time, it was not original, it was a rip-off.

Oh well. I still think the squid would have been better. But I'm guessing (wild guess here) that both the writers & the director thought: "Oh god, we can't end this on a note of a Japanese Giant Monster movie!! What else can we do instead?!!"

As a former girlfriend of mine once said, "It is what it is." I still like the film, and I expect I'll fall in love with the 1-hour longer Director's Cut when it comes out on DVD. Here's hoping it's as good as I imagine it will be.
