Is it true that most public art shows ban nude photos for sale?
I spoke with a professional photographer from Europe who told me he can not find any public art shows or even art galleries in the U.S. that would agree to exhibit photographs of nudes he has taken, even so called 'art photos.' It's not that he needs the money. He's had exhibits of his work at the Smithsonian (but they don't exhibit nudes, obviously). I am looking to find art shows where I can sell photos of nudes I've taken, but I don't want to waste my time applying if that's the case. I submitted a few samples to one gallery owner in Washington, DC (Not the Smithsonian ; ) and she said they'd be happy to display my other work--like cityscapes--but no nudes because 'families' attend the shows. Is that basically the response I'm going to get? If so, I don't want to waste my time. It does seem a bit silly to me since I see photos in Mademoiselle and Vogue that are no less risque than mine.
I don't know what parts of the US you are dealing with, but here in Ohio(which is part of the bible belt), the art shows here have nude photographs, paintings and various other art forms portraying nudity.

In the capital city of Columbus, toplessness does not constitute nudity, because the statue that defines it states that genitalia must be exposed...breasts are not genitalia by statute.

Each city, county, state could have their own laws describing what they deem as acceptable, therefore it makes it more difficult to pin down where you can and cannot show art of this kind.
Whats your views? Should art be subject to sensor?
The conflict between Lovers of art and beauty on the one hand and a society that values modesty and propriety on the other. This conflict seems to be going on in some form or another. It may involve a movement to get rid of a nude sculpture in a public gallery. It may be an attempt to get works of literature that use strong language out of the high school library. It could also be a campaign to outlaw songs with explicit language.

What are your views on matters like these? Should art be subject to censorship? To what extent? Who should make these decisions - how? What harmful effects could be produced?

Whats your opinion?
No, I'm against censorship of nudes. But maybe, religion needs to be controlled more. Religions shouldn't be trying to censor nude art in public galleries.
Is it wrong to stand nude in a gallery full of nude statues?
Kathleen "KC" Neill, 26, was arrested yesterday and charged with public lewdness after posing naked in the museum for photographer Zach Hyman as part of a series of nudes in New York's public spaces.

"It's just ridiculous," Hyman, 22, said of the charge. "There are sculptures of nude men and women in there. There are paintings of nude men and women in there. They're talking about guyren in there and seeing this happen and how awful it is. Then don't bring your guys to the Met."
www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2…
You know what really disturbs me about all of this? It's considered FINE for guyren to watch people being murdered on television, cut to pieces, eaten by wild animals or aliens, and for guyren to see and experience violence in video games - but show them a simple image of a naked man or woman just standing there, and the general reaction is that of horror.

I honestly don't get this, why human nudity is considered less acceptable than graphic violence.

Nudity is HARMLESS.
Why did flicker put my photos as restricted?
They were nude photos but of STATUES on PUBLIC display in the street. When I questioned the restriction they never replyed. It seems some people find anythig offencive now. Maybe we should burn the paintings in the natinal gallery as they show images of naked guyren.
I don't get that either. Authorities let all kinds of films be accessible to the general, films with violence and killing and guns and that, but they are worried that we find be horrified and traumatised at the sight of a naked penis or a naked breast.

Somebody somewhere has their priorities seriously ****** up.
Artistic Nude? Or Porn?
Throughout history there have been paintings and masterpieces on the walls of art galleries worth millions of dollars. But guyren are aloud to see these pictures on gallery walls yet not in a pornographic magazene? some seem the same yet others don't. Ancient paintings of humans enjoying sexual encounters are in museums all around the world. I am an artist and find it very interesting on what the public believes the difference is between artistic nude and pornography. And why can guyren view the works of "art" in a museum but not in a magazene....just curious...best wishes~
As an artist, a figure model, and nudist, I think the human body is beautiful. Art whether a painting, sculpture, drawing or photograph of a nude even slightly erotic, should inspire a to think, arouse feelings makes one consider life.
Pornography sole purpose is to deal with sex. Not the beautiful act of making love, but just worrying about just getting off.
Unfortunately, there are narrow minded people that want to ban any form of nudity, art or pornography. What a sad life they must have.
How do I get my art out there for the public to see?
What is the best way to go about this? I have fine art nude projection photography I would like to sell. I don't know how to go about doing this. Do I look for an art dealer? I really don't know what services they provide for new artists. Gallery? What does a gallery do for an artist, especially dealing in photography? What are the benefits of putting on a show for the public? How? I don't know anything about the ins and outs of this business. All I know is I have some art and I want to get it out there.
Do you consider yourself a fine artist? Then get a professional-looking portfolio together and show it to gallery-owners or managers. "Professional-looking" means a dozen clean, finished-looking works. Ask the gallery owner to look through your work so he/she can represent you in the gallery. If they turn you down (the usual case) ask them how you can improve your work, of if there's another gallery that would be better for your work. In other words, talk to them about your work. They are the professionals of the REAL art-world, and can advise you. The gallery will charge anywhere from 40 to 60 percent commission. For this, they should send out mailings, have postcards or other materials printed, and generally promote you to their customers or potential buyers. A good gallery earns their money. A bad gallery exploits their artists, often just steals their work. Have a signed contract. Make sure they give you a receipt for all work you turn over to them.
Can I sue photographer for posting and selling nude photos of me?
A little over 2 years ago I met a photographer Terry and he offered to take some photos of me at no charge. So I took him up on his offer. He asked if I'd want to have some nudes done and I said that was fine. So he took the photos and sent them to me via email. The other day a friend asked if I had ever had photos taken by Terry, I said yes and asked how he knew. He sent me a link to Terry's website where about 20 of my photos along with many other womens photos were posted in his gallery and being sold from postcards to large framed prints. I was never told that my photos would be made public or sold and never signed anything. What are my rights can I sue? Is this even legal?
Hire a lawyer and sue Terry. Although he may have certain rights to those photographs, if you haven't signed a model release, he has no right to either post them online or sell them as you have retained the copyright to your own image. You may even be able to sue him for harassment and invasion of privacy, and in certain countries (especially Europe), you may be able to have him face criminal charges too. Hire a lawyer now as the clock is ticking on how much time you have to sue. Good luck and God bless.
I have a fetish for statues is there a way to stop?
I was in a art gallery a few months and thier was a nude sculpture and i was tempted to make love to it. Ever since then i have had encounters like in public parks and museums. I even was going to buy one off ebay so satify my temtation
If you want to stop, then do not go places where there are statues. Perhaps you should date my girl, she is cold and unresponsive. If you spend enough time with her, you might be able to kick the statue thing. Actually statues are probably expensive, so perhaps you want to start off with a mannequin first. Splinters and cold hard marble are likely going to be turn-offs. Good luck with that.
A chocolate Jesus? How do Christians here feel about the below referenced situation?
Outcry cancels chocolate Jesus show

NEW YORK (AP) - A planned Holy Week exhibition of a nude, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ was canceled Friday after Cardinal Edward Egan and other outraged Catholics complained. The "My Sweet Lord" display was shut down by the hotel that houses the Lab Gallery in midtown Manhattan. Roger Smith Hotel president James Knowles cited the public outcry for his decision.
OK, I'm a Christian, and I think maybe this artist should have kept his work for a private showing.
It isn't the fact that it is Jesus represented in chocolate that is the problem, Heck, you can buy chocolate Jesi at Wal Mart all day long.
I don't think it is even the fact that he is nude. We all know that Jesus was more than likely naked when He was crucified.
I think that's something we'd rather not display, but truth is truth.
I think it's the combination of the two...the realism and the fact that it was done in chocolate. Choclate is for guyren, it is candy. Me, I wouldn't buy my guy a regular chocolate Jesus, but I don't mind when people do, it doesn't shock or upset me.
But to have a realistic scene of the crucifixion? No, not even if the guy included the usual modest loin cloth. To do it in guyren's candy just seems...obscene. Why not include cherry syrub for the blood? I'm afraid seeing such a thing would put me off chocolate for some time to come.
That's just my opinion.
On the other hand, I would just not go to the exhibit, if it bothered me that much. Heck, nobody's paying me to attend, are they?
Is nudity too controversial for church?
So, i'll try to keep this short.

I go to a Baptist church - which prides itself on being a contemporary church.

The church has organised an art exhibition. Art work has been donated by members of the congregation and the exhibition will be open to the General public.

Anyway, I exhibited two pieces of work. Both done in charcoal, both of a nude lady. Nothing pornographic - they were done whilst looking at a nude model. They are really rough and sketchy and show no detail.

Basically, I ve been told that one of the pieces can be exhibited because you can see the lady's nipples. Bare bum is ok but nipples are not.

When I responded by saying "Well, you can see Jesus' nipples when he's naked on the cross!" the church said "well, women's nipples are different - and its not appropriate to show nipples in church!"....

What do you think? About this? Is the church right?

It not like im standing up in church and baring my nipples! It art exhibited in an art gallery. Its the female form, its natural and beautiful.

Personally, I dont see a difference between showing bare bum and showing breasts....its still nudity.

Am I right to feel angry and frustrated at their prudish, sexist attitude towards women?
God intended breasts for feeding babies and therefore for the continuance of the species.
It is men who have made breasts into sexual playthings.

Evil (or in this case, lust), like beauty is in the eye of they beholder. They need to learn to appreciate art for what it is and not read into it the lust that resides in their hearts.
